Vyjayanthimala’s death scene in Dilip Kumar starrer Gunga Jumna was filmed in one take.

Nitin Bose’s 1961 classic Gunga Jumna is still remembered for its gripping narrative of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. Played by real-life siblings Dilip Kumar and Nasir Khan, the film’s emotional gravity remains unmatched even today.
One of the most poignant moments in the film is the death scene of Dhanno, played by Vyjayanthimala. In her memoir Bonding…A Memoir, the actress revealed that this sequence was shot in a single take.
According to the actress, the atmosphere on set was charged with pin‑drop silence, and no one called “cut” in between. After delivering her final lines, she had to remain completely still, holding her breath to appear lifeless. For a few seconds, there was no sound or signal, until she herself whispered “cut‑cut” to break the silence. The crew immediately burst into applause, overwhelmed by the intensity and emotion of the moment.
She recalled how, at the film’s premiere, it was none other than Mehboob Khan who openly praised her performance. He exclaimed that the young actress had done wonders and even turned to Dilip Kumar to remark that she had “devoured” him on screen.
For Vyjayanthimala, this was exhilarating, especially since the filmmaker had earlier expressed serious reservations about her.
She explained that speaking different languages had never been a challenge, and she handled the Purabi dialect with ease. That authenticity earned her the Filmfare Award and marked a turning point in her career. The performance, she said, sent her stock soaring and became one of her proudest moments.
Gunga Jumna is the tragic saga of two brothers who grow up together but are torn apart by destiny, with one becoming a law‑abiding policeman and the other an outlaw. The film opened to critical acclaim upon its release.
