Hair stylist Nanda who worked with Urmila Matondkar recalled an incident when they did a photoshoot for Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela.
After working as a child artist in several films, Urmila Matondkar made her Bollywood debut as an adult with Sunny Deol’s Narsimha in 1991. However, it was Ram Gopal Varma’s 1995 romantic drama Rangeela which emerged as a major turning point in her career and catapulted her into stardom.
Recently in an interview with Bollywood Now, hair stylist Nanda recalled her ‘challenging’ experience of working with Urmila for a photoshoot of Rangeela that took place in Borivali National Park.
Nanda revealed an incident that dates back to time when she used to assist another hair stylist named Maria, but was also starting to work independently.
The hair stylist recalled, “Urmila asked ‘Where is Maria?’ I said ‘Didi has gone for a shoot. She had to go urgently’. So she asked ‘is this not a shoot? Isn’t this work too?’ So I said ‘I don’t know anything. Didi has sent me’.
Nanda revealed that as she started working on Urmila’s hair, the ‘Judaai’ actress started pointing out her mistakes to a point that she eventually broke down.
“She would constantly point out mistakes because she wanted to work with Maria. She was okay with me assisting but she didn’t like that I was working on her independently. I would just stand with tears rolling down my eyes but I never cried in front of her. She only wanted to work with Maria. We were never comfortable with her,” Nanda told the portal.
She said that she worked with many actors throughout her career but she found Urmila to be the most difficult of the lot and added that this was the only experience that genuinely scared her.
Rangeela tells the story of a young woman whose ambition of becoming a famous actress is met with several hurdles when a noted actor, and, her childhood friend, both fall in love with her. Besides Urmila, the film also features Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff.
