Director Ahmed Khan finally reveals what happened to Sanjay Dutt’s role in Welcome To The Jungle, and explains the real reason behind his sudden exit after filming started.

Ever since Welcome To The Jungle made its grand debut in theatres, a major talking point among moviegoers has been a lingering behind-the-scenes mystery: what exactly happened to Sanjay Dutt? The veteran actor was a major highlight of the film’s star-studded original announcement, and even shot for a couple of days before Suniel Shetty eventually stepped into the role.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, director Ahmed Khan cleared the air, explaining that the change had nothing to do with creative differences but everything to do with scheduling. According to him, the role was always written the same way, and Sanjay’s repeated date clashes made it impossible to continue.
Ahmed recalled how Sanjay tried to reshuffle his calendar more than once, but the team eventually felt guilty about asking him to keep adjusting. “The show must go on,” he said, adding that Sanjay himself encouraged Suniel to take over. In fact, the camaraderie among the cast was evident when Suniel told Jackie Shroff to step in for him and take up his role.
Once Suniel Shetty came on board, Ahmed leaned into his established screen image. With his surname fitting perfectly into the character name “Shetty,” and traits borrowed from his eccentric Yeda Anna persona in Awara Paagal Deewana, the casting felt organic.
In Welcome To The Jungle, Suniel plays the brother of Uday Shetty, Nana Patekar’s iconic character from the Welcome franchise, and the meta references were deliberately woven in to spark nostalgia. By blending familiar quirks with fresh energy, Ahmed Khan ensured that audiences would instantly connect with Suniel’s version of the character.
The smart changes paid off, as Welcome To The Jungle has quickly crossed the 100-crore mark at the box office right after its release. The comic caper is anchored by a massive ensemble cast of 34 actors, led by Akshay Kumar alongside comedy veterans Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, and Arshad Warsi.
