Varun Dhawan, in a new interview, talked about his upcoming film Bawaal going straight for an OTT release.
Varun Dhawan’s upcoming film Bawaal is headed for a direct OTT release. Helmed by Nitesh Tiwari of ‘Dangal’ fame, the movie features Janhvi Kapoor as the female lead. In a recent interaction with a news portal, Varun was asked about Bawaal skipping a theatrical release. In response, the actor shared that it is not possible to make a film without an OTT partner in the current economic climate.
Varun told Bollywood Hungama, “Theatres are not going anywhere. They are here to stay. The collective experience of watching a film and celebrating is still there and we love it. As actors, that’s the biggest joy and high you get. But, in today’s economic climate, you cannot make a film without an OTT partner. Because 70 percent of your capital to make a film is coming from… (OTT) 70 percent. So you should ask any producer how important the OTT players are for them to make films today. They will tell you how important they are.”
His co-star Janhvi Kapoor who was also a part of the conversation added that OTT platforms are a big part of the industry now.
Previously, at the trailer launch event of Bawaal in Dubai, the film’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala while speaking about why they chose an OTT release for their movie, had shared, “We started this film about a year back and when we were going through the material, after seeing the dailies and the edit, all of us thought that this should be said internationally on a single day simultaneously in all the languages.” He had also added that the film’s cast and crew had agreed for the OTT release.
Bawaal is slated to premiere on July 21, 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.
