Tanishk Bagchi, who composed the hit title track ‘Saiyaara,’ stated that the tune of his song is not lifted from One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ or Jubin Nautiyal’s ‘Humnava Mere’.
Mohit Suri‘s musical romantic drama Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday in his Bollywood debut opposite Aneet Padda, has taken the box office by storm. Not just that even the songs from the film have been topping musical charts. In fact, the title song from the film has become the new Gen Z anthem.
Sung by indie artist Faheem Abdullah with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, the Saiyaara title track composed by Tanishk Bagchi, has also grabbed the No. 4 spot on both Spotify’s Top Global chart and Billboard Global (excluding US) chart. Amidst all this, there were recently strong whispers online where some listeners claimed some parts of the song’s tune felt similar to One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ or Jubin Nautiyal’s ‘Humnava Mere’.
In a chat with India Today, Tanishk Bagchi reacted to these plagiarism allegations.
He said, “Whatever I do, people will have something to say because they don’t have [anything better to do]. They keep on looking for opportunities to put me down. But ultimately, the song will go wherever it’s destined to, and that’s what’s happening with Saiyaara too. As for the comparisons — if you look at the melody, the chords are the same. The A minor scale has just about 3–4 chords, but every melody has a different soul. That doesn’t mean anything was stolen.”
“Even if you can do that, it’s really difficult to make it a hit. All said and done, we didn’t steal anything. The similarities are fine, it can happen, but it’s not like we did it on purpose. Idhar se utha ke udhar nahi kiya (We didn’t pick something from there and add it here). We worked on the emotion of the song, and that worked. That’s the magic of Saiyaara,” Bagchi told the publication.
Saiyaara follows the story of a troubled musician, Krish (Ahaan Panday) and a shy poet, Vaani (Aneet Padda) as they forge a healing bond through music, only to be torn apart by fate.
