Nithya Menen talked about sexism in the film industry and said that it is important to give people credit where they deserve.
Nithya Menen is one of the few leading ladies who doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind. The actress, in one of her recent interviews, called out the existing hierarchy in the film industry where heroes and directors are priorised over the female leads. She slammed this practice and said that it is important to give credit where they deserve, irrespective of their gender.
The OK Kanmani star told Galatta Plus, “There is a clear-cut hierarchy, right? Hero, director, heroine – hierarchy, That’s how it is. That’s how your caravans are placed, that’s how you are called on stage. If an aarti is taken that’s the order they’ll give it to you. It’s not even the order the people are standing. It bothers me, all of this is like…really? You want to live a life like this? This is so small minded, just be normal. Be natural. Give people credit where they deserve, whether they are a woman or man.”
Nithya talked about being on sets where there was ‘pin drop silence’ after she performed a scene people have liked. On the other hand, the whole set clapped and cheered for the male lead for his ‘mediocre performance.’
Meanwhile, few days back, Nithya’s Kadhalikka Neramillai co-star Ravi Mohan (Jayam Ravi) had mentioned how Nithya’s name was placed first in the poster of their film because she had an equally important role in it.
He had revealed that he had adopted this habit from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was the first to list his leading lady’s name before his own.
Responding to Ravi’s comment, the National-Award winning actress said, “When I saw my name first, it felt like it’s healing something in people’s consciousness. I consider things like this path-breaking, and not just Kiru or me, but Ravi is also a part of that. Because he said, go ahead, do it.”
Nithya is currently busy with the promotions of her upcoming film Kadhalikka Neramillai which releases in cinema halls today.
