A known face in the theatre circuit and the Marathi film industry, Mukta Barve has been winning hearts for several years now. The actress, who is known for films like Jogwa and Mumbai Pune Mumbai franchise, is also one of the few leading ladies who doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind.

In a recent interview with The Week, Mukta Barve pointed out the ‘pay gap’ in the Marathi film industry and called it one of her pet peeves.

Citing example of her co-star Swapnil Joshi who is also a close friend, the actress explained, “Both of us have almost the same fan following on social media but, as per the producer, the hero and heroine are placed at different levels, with him [Joshi] almost always claiming the upper hand. There were times when producers would ask me to adjust my fees on the excuse that they were casting [a hero] whose charges were way higher than mine. The producer is the one who draws the lines of bias here.”

She even revealed that she once walked out of a project after she was made to change her date to suit the male lead’s schedule.

However, Mukta also added that things are slowly changing for female actors as they are now getting to lead the narrative.

“I think we, as women, are no longer only expected to look good and be showpieces in the narrative,” the publication quoted her as saying.

Speaking about the changing landscape in the Marathi film industry, Mukta said that it is driven by content, and not stars.

“If the audience wants to dream, they go to Bollywood; if they want slice-of-life, real cinema, they watch Marathi films and theatre,” she told the portal.
