Filmmaker JP Dutta launched Kareena Kapoor Khan in Hindi cinema with his film, Refugee (2000). The cross border romance also marked the acting debut of Abhishek Bachchan. In one of her interactions with a publication, Kareena recounted her first day on the sets of this film, and shared that she waiting all day and night to give her first shot.

The ‘Jab We Met’ actress told Brut India, “I waited all day for the shot, like, all day. And the shot didn’t happen. And then I was waiting all night. And then too, no shot. I was like, ‘What is happening? Is the shot even happening?’ On your first film, you are like, ‘What is going to happen?’ I am just waiting here endlessly for the shot. And at quarter to four in the morning, the assistant director comes to me and says, ‘Shot is ready.’ And he said, ‘It is your introduction shot.'”

While speaking about her experience of working with JP Dutta, Kareena revealed that the director would never verbally okay the shot, and instead would just pick up the camera and walk to the other side if he got the things that he wanted.

“JP sahib had a habit, he would not say okay. He would just take the shot and before you know, he would take the camera and go on to the other side. That means the shot is okay. He just did the shot and it was my first shot of Refugee, when he lifts the veil and asks, “Paani milega?” He said, ‘Camera, rolling and action,’ and I did it. and after that, ‘Cut’. He didn’t say anything. He said, ‘Haan ji’ and he just took that camera and walked away,” the actress shared with the publication.

A confused Bebo then asked the ‘Border’ director if the shot was okay, and the latter replied in affirmative.

Kareena recalled, “I said, ‘But we did only one…’ because back then they had to print the shots, it was not digital. So I was like, ‘We did just one, if something goes wrong, what will happen? My career is at stake here.’ He said yeah its fine, it’s a one take okay. Maybe I just got spoiled by that.”

Refugee revolves around a young man who makes his living by couriering other refugees across the Pakistan border, and ends up falling in love with a woman whose family he helped in a similar way. The film also features Suniel Shetty in a pivotal role.
