Karan Johar slammed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and admitted that he got the gender politics wrong in his debut directorial.
Karan Johar made his directorial debut in Hindi cinema with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji. Over the years, the romantic drama has achieved a cult status and often features in pop culture references.
However, Karan at a recent promotional event for his upcoming romantic drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, criticised Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and admitted that he got the gender politics of that film wrong. He also added that he has evolved as a filmmaker over the years.
As per a report in News18, Karan while speaking at a recent IMMUN event said, “I feel like I have grown as an individual, The first film that I made, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I firmly believe that the gender politics of that film was all wrong. It is propagating incorrect gender politics, there is a lot of surfaces-ness in that film. Of course, there is nostalgia so you love it, but you don’t scratch the surface of the film and see that what Rahul is doing is actually not what I would want all the Rahuls in the audience, or all the boys in general, to do.”
The filmmaker further slammed Shah Rukh Khan’s character Rahul in his film and went on to say that he did ‘all kinds of wrong things’.
Karan added, “Rahul was saying all kinds of wrong things. He said, ‘Hum ek bar pyaar karte hai (We fall in love once)’, but he got in love twice. He said, ‘Hum ek baar shaadi karte hai (We marry once),’ he got married twice. He was contradicting himself throughout the film.”
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which released in 1998, revolves a young girl who as per her mother’s last wish, sets out to reunite her father with the college best friend who loved him, only to discover the woman is engaged.
