Writer Ranbir Pushp reveals how Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri filmed Dekha Pyar Tumhara without speaking a single word off camera.
Behind the bright lights of movie sets, actors do not always get along. A great example of this happened during the making of the 1985 Hindi film Dekha Pyar Tumhara. On screen, Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri looked like two people deeply in love. But off camera, the reality was completely different. The two stars completed the whole movie without saying a single word to each other.
The story behind this cold war was recently revealed by veteran writer and producer Ranbir Pushp in an interview with host Siddharth Kannan. Pushp explained that the trouble started when they were picking the actors for the film. Kamal Haasan wanted Poonam Dhillon to be the main actress. But Pushp had another idea and really wanted Rati Agnihotri for the role. He went ahead, met Rati’s father, and signed her for the movie anyway.
When Kamal Haasan found out that Rati got the part, he did not throw a tantrum or yell. Pushp said Kamal was a sensible person and kept his cool. But even though there were no big fights, a cold wall went up between the two lead stars as soon as shooting started.
A few days into filming, the crew noticed something strange. Kamal and Rati were totally ignoring each other. They did not say “hi,” “hello,” or even look at each other between shots. The producer was worried about how a love story could work when the hero and heroine refused to talk.
Surprisingly, their silence did not ruin the movie. Every time the director yelled “action,” both actors turned on their charm and acted like best friends or lovers. But as soon as the director said “cut,” they went right back to ignoring each other. They kept this up until the entire movie was finished.
To this day, anyone watching Dekha Pyar Tumhara would never guess the intense cold shoulder happening behind the scenes. Their pure professionalism allowed them to create a believable romantic dynamic out of thin air.
Dekha Pyar Tumhara is a lighthearted romantic comedy where Anu, a wealthy young woman, marries Vishal but finds him inattentive. She hilariously tries to train him using a book, only for Vishal to discover the trick, which leads to chaos before love eventually wins.
