Hasrat Jaipuri recalled how his real-life confession became Junglee’s romantic anthem ‘Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par,’ picturized on Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu.

Some songs live far beyond the films they were written for, carrying emotions that feel just as fresh decades later. One such classic melody is ‘Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par’ from Junglee (1961) featuring Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu. What makes it truly special is that its lyricist, Hasrat Jaipuri, once revealed the song came directly from his own life.
In a rare 1987 interview for Channel 4’s Movie Mahal series, Hasrat Jaipuri shared how a shy, trembling moment at a party, when he struggled to express his feelings to a woman, became the inspiration for one of Bollywood’s most unforgettable love songs.
He recalled, “At a party, I happened to meet a woman, you could call her a beauty. I wanted to speak to her, but I never had the courage. Sometimes my lips trembled, sometimes my hands and feet shook. Then one day, with great difficulty, I held her hand and told her, “At least listen to what I wish to say. Whether you say yes or no, that is for destiny to decide.”
“Keeping that incident in mind, I wrote the song that was later included in Junglee– ‘Ehsan tera hoga mujh par, dil chahta hai woh kehne do, mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai, mujhe palkon ki chaav mein rehne do,'” Jaipuri added.
‘Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par’ is a timeless piece of music that still touches hearts with its gentle words and soulful tune. Hasrat Jaipuri’s personal feelings gave it honesty, while Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu’s chemistry made it unforgettable on screen.
Directed by Subodh Mukherjee, Junglee revolves around Shekhar (Shammi Kapoor), a strict young man raised in a household where laughter is forbidden. His life changes when he meets Rajkumari (Saira Banu), whose love helps him break free from rigid traditions and discover joy, romance, and freedom.
Along with its beautiful songs, the musical also gave Hindi cinema one of its most memorable moments: Shammi Kapoor’s joyful cry of ‘Yahoo!’ in ‘Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe’ song. That shout became his trademark and is still remembered as a symbol of his lively screen persona.
