Director H Vinoth reveals why 80% of Bhagavanth Kesari’s second half was scrapped for Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, making it vastly different from the original hit.
Director H Vinoth has officially confirmed what fans had been guessing for months: his upcoming film Jana Nayagan is an official remake of the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. However, he was quick to clarify that viewers will see a vastly different version on the big screen this Thursday. Only about half of the original story remains, with the rest completely rewritten to match Vijay’s massive stardom and the expectations of Tamil audiences.
While speaking to Galatta Plus, Vinoth revealed that the idea to adapt the Balakrishna-starrer originally came from Vijay’s manager, Jagadish. Having previously remade Pink as Nerkonda Paarvai with Ajith Kumar, he admitted he was initially hesitant to take on another adaptation. While Pink had been a deeply transformative project for him personally, repeating the remake route didn’t feel entirely natural. He eventually said yes because it offered a rare, final opportunity to direct Vijay before the superstar transitions full-time into active politics.
Adapting the material, however, brought its own set of fears. Vinoth pointed out that Balakrishna and Vijay operate in completely different cinematic spaces. While the “Balayya Universe” thrives on larger-than-life spectacle where anything can happen without heavy logical scrutiny, Vijay’s universe follows a distinct ground reality. Translating a high-energy Telugu entertainer into a story grounded enough for Tamil commercial sensibilities meant reshaping the narrative without losing the core emotional weight of Anil Ravipudi’s original work.
To put it into numbers, Vinoth revealed that Jana Nayagan retains just 50% of Bhagavanth Kesari. The first half keeps around 60% of the original setup, but the second half drops down to a mere 20%. This huge shift allowed Vinoth to craft a fresh narrative arc for the latter portion, focusing heavily on political conflict and democratic themes.

Interestingly, Vijay himself was deeply attached to the project from the start. When Vinoth initially questioned the need for a remake, Vijay walked him through the Telugu film scene by scene to explain why it resonated with him, particularly its strong focus on women empowerment.
Released in 2023, Bhagavanth Kesari follows Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari (Nandamuri Balakrishna), a fearless ex-prisoner who raises Vijji (Sreeleela), a young girl, teaching her strength and resilience while clashing with a ruthless businessman (played by Arjun Rampal) whose past ties threaten their lives.
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan features him alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, amongst others.
