Farhan Akhtar shared the reason why he decided to cast Ranveer Singh instead of Shah Rukh Khan in Don 3.
A month ago, when actor-director Farhan Akhtar announced the much anticipated Don 3 with Ranveer Singh headlining the cast, it drew a mixed reaction on social media. While some fans were reluctant to accept Ranveer as SRK’s replacement in the franchise, there was also a section of people who expressed their excitement over seeing the Cirkus actor in this new avatar.
In a new interview with Variety, Farhan Akhtar, the director of Don 3 opened up on this new casting and emphasised that he was “not in the position of replacing anybody.”
He was quoted as saying by Variety, “These are things that we discussed over the years, I wanted to take a certain direction with the story, but somehow we (Shah Rukh Khan and I) just couldn’t find common ground. We just parted mutually knowing that it’s probably for the best. So that’s where it is.”

Further, speaking about Ranveer taking the baton from the ‘Jawan’ star to play this iconic character in his actioner, he shared, “I’m really excited Ranveer’s on board. He’s so charged and so ready to go. It’s a big film, just purely from the point of view of an actor, it’s a big thing to do, and we’re really excited to have him on board. His energy is energizing us, so to speak.”
Previously, the film’s producer Ritesh Sidhwani had also reacted to the backlash over Don 3’s casting and said, “It’s nothing. We will answer that when we come to Don 3. When you see the trailer, you tell me if that guy lives up to what the character [demands in the film]. Now, it’s our job to make sure it happens.”
Don 3 is slated to release in 2025.
