Anil Kapoor opened up on the underwhelming box office performance of his 1991 film Lamhe co-starring late Sridevi.
Anil Kapoor took a major risk when he signed Yash Chopra’s 1991 film Lamhe which had quite an ‘unconventional’ plot by the standards of those times. Sadly, the film, upon its release, flopped at the box office as the audience rejected the idea of the hero falling in love with both mother and daughter (played by late Sridevi).
Over the years, Lamhe has achieved a cult status for the performances and songs. Despite its poor performance at the box office, the film’s leading man Anil Kapoor continues to stand by it and believes that it helped him in building his credibility as an actor.
Recently in an interview with Bombay Times, Anil reflected upon Lamhe. The actor, who featured without his trademark moustache in the film, recently joked that it could be one of the reasons why the film failed to impress the audience.
Anil told the publication, “I just felt naked when I did Lamhe, to be honest with you. People were shocked. It was not a very positive reaction. People who had loved the films like Ram Lakhan (1989), Tezaab (1988), and Mr. India, they felt, ‘No, we want him to look a particular way.’ Obviously, the content was slightly, they felt, was ahead of its time. I didn’t. I just liked it, loved it. That’s the reason the film didn’t do well that time.”
The Bollywood star said that he was confident about Lamhe standing the test of time and having ‘long legs’.
When you do a very mainstream, commercial film, and it’s not a good film, and if that film doesn’t do well, it harms you a lot. But if you do a good film with a good filmmaker and good co-stars, and you’ve done well, even if the film doesn’t work, it’s not going to harm you. It only helps you build your credibility as a professional actor or a star, whatever you may call it. I’ve tried my best to attach myself to these kind of filmmakers and actors,” Kapoor was quoted as saying.
On the film front, Anil Kapoor was last seen in Abhinay Deo’s Savi, alongside Divya Khosla Kumar and Harshvardhan Rane.
