Aishwarya Rajesh opened up on the challenges on doing a female-centric film like Farhana and why it is important for films headlined by women to do well at the box office.

Aishwarya Rajesh’s latest release, Farhana has received a positive response both from the critics and the audience. The Tamil film revolves around a Muslim woman from a conservative family who joins a call centre because of their dire financial situation, but soon realizes that there’s more to it than meets the eye at her workplace.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Aishwarya spoke about the challenges of doing a female-centric movie and said that doing a film with a hero isn’t as hectic as doing a women-centric movie.

She told the publication, “You have so much responsibility on you when you are doing a women-centric film and if the movie doesn’t do well, people will obviously say the actor flopped. To do a female-centric film, I had so much responsibility to take care of because it had to be unique, with commercial elements and a lot of things. After COVID-19, we are all exposed to so many languages and everything has become so global.”

On being asked if women still have a long way to go to get equal representation from what male actors get in the film industry, Aishwarya replied, “Only if my film is doing well, that is not going to change anything. When all the female actors’ and so many female-centric films will do well, it will make a difference.”

She continued, “In Tamil, there are very few actresses like Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Samantha, Sai Pallavi, and Trisha (who do women-centric films), and their films should also do well and then it will become an equal industry. I wish all the female-centric films do really well so we have balance in the equation and it won’t be called a male dominant industry. It won’t happen overnight but I can see the changes already. 10 years down, am very sure it is going to change and make a huge difference.”

Meanwhile, besides the audience and the critics, Farhana has also received a thumbs up from Karthi. The actor recently took to his Twitter handle to laud the suspense thriller and wrote, “The economy and the communication technology puts a lot of pressure on our relationships. Farhana captures the entire experience intensely. Beautiful dialogues. Great performance by Aishwarya Rajesh, Jithan Ramesh, Selvaraghavan and Kitty sir. Congratulations Nelson Venkatesan and team.”
