Varun Dhawan spoke about the time when his filmmaker-father David Dhawan was ready to leave him in London after he called Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ‘cooler’ than dad’s film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
In 1998, the Hindi film industry saw one of its biggest box office clashes of that year when David Dhawan’s comic caper Bade Miyan Chote Miyan locked horns with Karan Johar’s romantic drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. While Bade Miyan Chote Miyan featured Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in dual roles, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai boosted a star cast comprising of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji with a special cameo by Salman Khan.
In a recent interview with Indian Express, Varun Dhawan recalled his dad David Dhawan’s hilarious reaction when the actor told him that he thought Karan Johar’s film was much ‘cooler’ than his.
The actor admitted that he had no idea why Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’s premiere was held in London, and went on to share how the producers got them a limousine with Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan’s faces pasted on it for travelling.
Varun said, “We were going through the streets of London in that limousine, with both of them making funny faces in the poster. But I was dying to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I didn’t even know Karan at that point of time.”
He continued, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai just felt like a cooler film, but my dad was like, Stop it, I will leave you on the streets here.’ I remember telling him you can’t treat children here like this and my dad was like, ‘He is so badly behaved, why did I get him here.’ Day one of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was bigger because of the mass factor but obviously Kuch Kuch Hota Hai went on to become a huge hit. And I ultimately got launched by Karan Johar.”
For the unversed, the ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ actor made his big screen debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year (2012) alongside two other actors- Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt.
