Deepa Sahi shared her experience of working with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Ketan Mehta’s 1993 film Maya Memsaab.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Maya Memsaab co-star Deepa Sahi was all praise for the Bollywood star in a recent interaction with an entertainment portal on the completion of 30 years of their film. She recalled him as being an “energetic” and “dedicated” actor who cared for everyone on the sets.
While chatting with Bollywood Hungama, the actress said, “He is the most energetic and dedicated actor with an instinctive cinematic sense. One can’t learn such things. They need to be part of the personality and he surely had an instinct for that. Besides the fact that he is a thorough gentleman and caring for everyone on the sets, it is his energy that is the most infectious.”
She also termed him as someone who was a ‘kid at heart’ and added that he would always be playing some or the other game and was really into computer games in the early 1990s.
Speaking about Maya Memsaab, at the time of its release, the Ketan Mehta directorial had stirred a controversy over some intimate scenes featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepa Sahi.
Deepa recalled the shoot and said that she was “giggly at first but then you got to do what you got to do.” She further added that she was “misunderstood” by some at the time of the film’s release, but was relieved as “99.99 % of people got the intention.” The actress said that the CBFC passed those intimate scenes because they were shot aesthetically.
“I remember at a terrace party, someone told Shakti Samanta ji, who was the Chief of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) then, that he was partial to Ketan Mehta as he allowed bold scenes but imposed cuts for even some dance moves for others. And he graciously replied, ‘You make a piece of poetry Ketan has made, and I promise not to impose any cuts.’ That was amazing,” Sahi shared with the portal.
Besides Shah Rukh Khan and Deepa Sahi, Maya Memsaab also featured Farooq Shaikh, Raj Babbar and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles.
