Ever since Ranbir Kapoor made his acting debut in the Hindi film industry with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s eye-pleasing Saawariya in 2007, the actor has dabbled with different genres and given us many memorable characters to cherish. One amongst them is Bunny from Ayan Mukerji’s hit flick, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

In this coming-of-age romantic comedy, Ranbir essayed the role of a flamboyant guy who values his dreams more than his bonds. Besides his indecisive nature, the character is seen flirting with attractive women throughout the film and even lying to them.

Ten years after its release, the character Bunny recently became a talking point on social media when a section of netizens called him ‘toxic’ and listed down their reasons for the same. Some felt that he was narcissist who didn’t deserve Naina (Deepika Padukone’s character) while others opined that the film subconsciously promoted casual sexism and toxic masculinity.

Now, in an interview with OTT Play for his upcoming film, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Ranbir Kapoor has reacted to this criticism about Bunny.

The actor was quoted by as saying by the portal, “I remember when Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was released, people really loved that film. But today, there is a certain conversation that he is a toxic character.”

He further added, “Now I’m not doing Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to spread that toxic masculinity; I was playing a part. So as an actor, I’ve got enough empathy for that character to play that part. But I am not that person. I am not the characters I play, so that is an understanding I have. But there is nothing that I wouldn’t want to do.”

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a huge commercial hit upon its release and is still remembered for its chartbuster songs and Ranbir-Deepika’s enticing chemistry.
