Rajpal Yadav opened up on the disappointing performance of Varun Dhawan starrer Baby John at the box office.
Varun Dhawan’s Baby John was one of the anticipated movies of last year and marked the return of the Bollywood actor in the action space after a long gap. Unfortunately, the action thriller failed to live up to the expectations of cinegoers and delivered an underwhelming performance at the box office.
The film, reportedly made on a budget of Rs 180 Crore, couldn’t even cross Rs 50-crore mark at the box office.
Recently in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Rajpal Yadav got candid about Baby John’s dismal performance, and claimed that the film could have worked better if people had not watched the original Tamil film Theri which starred Vijay. The Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 star essayed the role of constable Ram Sevak, a deputy to Varun’s character, DCP Satya Verma.
Rajpal said, “If this wasn’t a remake, then this would have been the most well-made film of my 25-year career. But since Vijay had done it, the audience had already seen it and because it was a remake, it affected the box office of the film.”

On being asked if the film’s leading man Varun Dhawan is ‘depressed’ after Baby John‘s poor performance, he clarified that wasn’t the case, and added that one must appreciate Varun’s attempts to take risks.
“Varun is such a sweet boy, very hardworking. He has always tried to do something different, and his attempts must be appreciated because it’s a big deal to take risks,” Rajpal said in his interview.
Baby John marked the directorial debut of Kalees who was an assistant to filmmaker Atlee. Atlee, who helmed the original Tamil film Theri, presented this Varun Dhawan starrer. While Keerthy Suresh, in her Hindi film debut, reprised Samantha’s role from the original film, Wamiqa Gabbi stepped into Amy Jackson’s shoes.
