Vyjayanthimala, in a throwback interview, shared how she choreographed her own graceful moves in Bimal Roy’s Madhumati song ‘Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dhadke.’

Cinema often thrives on moments of improvisation. One such moment was born in Bimal Roy’s 1958 classic Madhumati, where the film’s heroine Vyjayanthimala was asked to approach a song not with rehearsed steps, but with her own imagination.
In a throwback interview with Rediff in 1993, Vyjayanthimala walked down the memory lane and shared, “Madhumati had several song-and-dance numbers and for one of them, ‘Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dhadke’, instead of employing a choreographer, he just asked me to do the song my way.”
“I thought long and hard about it and devised some exuberant, running movements. I decided to run like a deer in a jungle to capture my rustic character’s essence. It wasn’t a dance in the true sense, yet I thought the end result was very graceful,” she recalled.
Well, we must say, her idea of running like a deer was sheer genius! It synced perfectly with the rustic, forest-rooted character she played in this Dilip Kumar starrer. Also, this anecdote is the kind of mic‑drop moment that proves sometimes, freedom creates the most graceful art.
Madhumati remains unforgettable even today for its haunting reincarnation story, its mist‑covered, atmospheric hill settings, and Salil Chowdhury’s evergreen soundtrack which includes songs like ‘Aaja Re Pardesi’ and ‘Suhaana Safar.’
