Kajol On Why Women-Led Films Fail To Do As Well As Hero-Centric Films In Theatres: It Has To Do With Spending Power, Pure Commerce

Kajol, in a recent interview, opened up on why female-centric films generally fail to mint big numbers at the box office.

    Kajol Devgn

Ahead of the release of her upcoming web series, Disney+ Hotstar’s The Good Wife, Kajol, known for delivering several powerful performances, explained why women-led movies don’t fare well as movies headlined by heroes at the box office. The actress feels that the OTT platforms offer better opportunities to female actors in comparison to films.

According to Kajol, the spending power lies in the hands of men in our country and it’s mostly they who decide which movie to watch or not to watch.

“It has to do with the spending power. Spending power is 99.9 percent in the man’s hands and you don’t have that big spend power in the female side of the population. They might manage things in the house but at the end of the day, being able to spend on a movie ticket – I am not talking about groceries of the house – on the movie ticket, the luxuries of life, is in the hands of man and they are making the decision as to which film they want to go for or don’t want to go for,” Film Companion quoted the Gupt actress as saying.

She further continued, “Like I said, we have had films which are women-led and they have done well but may be not as well as a film which has a hero in it. I genuinely feel that it has to do with economics, it’s pure commerce. I truly believe that.”

However, the actress now believes that things are slowly changing with women coming into their own spending power and told the portal, “So yes I think we should do a Wonder Woman in Hindi and see if it works as well as…I don’t know… a Bholaa?”

Kajol made her OTT debut with Renuka Shahane’s Hindi directorial Tribhanga in 2021. This year, she featured in one of the stories in Netflix’s anthology Lust Stories. Now, the actress is awaiting the release of The Good Wife in which she essays the role of a lawyer, whose husband cheats on her and finds himself entangled in a sexual harassment case.
