Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was apprehensive about the hook step in his iconic song ‘Jumma Chumma’ from Hum and wanted to change it. However, his actress-wife Jaya Bachchan had a different take on it and the ‘hook step’ was retained in the final cut.
Bollywood’s Shahenshah has many superhit songs to his credit and one of them is the highly popular ‘Jumma Chumma’ song from Mukul Anand’s 1991 film Hum. Dressed in a white shirt, black jacket and black pants with a red piece of cloth draped around his neck, Big B sent his fans into a frenzy as he wooed the ultra-glamorous Kimi Katkar in this track. Years passed by but the hook step of this song remains popular with the audience.
But do you folks know that Amitabh Bachchan was initially hesitant about the iconic hook step as he felt it was ‘vulgar’? However, his actress-wife Jaya Bachchan, on the contrary, loved the step and felt that it would emerge as a hit. Nevertheless, Big B decided to go ahead with his wife’s take on the dance step and the rest is history.
Noted choreographer Chinni Prakash made this surprising revelation when he recently graced the show ‘Weekend With Ramesh.’ He revealed that it was Govinda who brought him on board for the song. When he went to Amitabh Bachchan’s vanity van and showed him some steps for the song ‘Jumma Chumma’, the actor was skeptical of the hook step as he felt that it was ‘vulgar’.
Chinni recalled, “He (Amitabh) saw the hook step I did for Jumma Chumma and said, ‘It is vulgar. What are you doing? It looks bad.’ I said we could try something different but then he suggested we could try the steps and could leave out later it if it did not look good.”
He further added, “When we saw the song after editing, Jaya Bachchan was also present and she was happy to see that step. She said ‘This is the best step, people will not forget this’. Jaya Ji felt the hook step would become a hit. Even if Amitabh was not really okay with the hook step, it was Jaya ji who said the hook step will be remembered by everyone even in the upcoming eras. She even asked Amitabh Bachchan to retain the hook step in the song.”
