Excerpts from the interview –
Q. Was becoming an actress always a part of your dream?
A. Showbiz has always attracted me. I wanted to enjoy the fame and in no time Bigg Boss helped me to enjoy that but I never knew that it would also bring so many baseless controversies. But anyways, I believe in moving forward and accepting them as part and parcel of the profession. But now, I’m enjoying acting and yes, I want people to know Arshi Khan because of her art.
Q. While growing up, what were the kind of films that you watched? Was there any particular film which you believe left a lasting impression on you?
A. I grew up on romantic and comedy films. In fact, today I enjoy watching them. Being a Bhaijaan (Salman Khan) fan, action too is in my watchlist.
Q. Not many people know that you did a lot of theatre plays in Bhopal before you became an actor. What were the major lessons that you learnt when you were on the stage?
A. I enjoy acting and theatre helped me to become a professional actor. My parents always supported me and respected my art. That time was seriously precious in my life. I miss those days and now I’m focusing on digital shows. Let’s see what my card holds for my future.
Q. How did you bag your first film, The Last Emperor and your Tamil debut, Naresh-starrer Malli Mishtu?
A. It just happened. I didn’t really struggle to get those opportunities. I’m happy to be part of those beautiful movies.
Q. Do you recall the first time when you faced the camera?
A. It was the most beautiful moment in my life as I was living my dream and hoping to explore to make it big. I’m seriously thankful to the Almighty for helping me to bring my dream come true.
Q. During the early days of your career, you must have gone through your own share of struggles and rejections. What kept you going?
A. I never struggled. But emotionally, I was very sad to stay away from my family while I was shifting to Mumbai. I’m addicted to my parents and brothers. I used to talk to them for hours over call. Now we can easily do video calls. Their support was helping me to be strong. I met many people in love who actually tried to harm me. But thanks to Allah who always blessed me.
Q. You call Bigg Boss a major turning point in your life. What was your biggest takeaway from that show and do you feel reality shows pave way for bigger opportunities?
A. Yes, it definitely is. It made the name Arshi Khan a brand. I feel reality shows are opportunities which make a direct path between you and the world. But it’s all about your art which can impress the audience with the entertainment. I don’t feel every individual doing a reality show becomes a celebrity.
Q. Lastly, what’s the best piece of advice that you have received from someone in the industry?
A. My father told me to be focused and avoid negativity. People will try to pull you down but if you can avoid them, you will find yourself reaching high. It is not only about this industry but wherever you go.
