Had Dev Anand been alive, he would have turned 100 today! The man who donned many hats during his career in the film industry has left an incredible legacy behind which is unmatchable. Speaking about his filmography, the legendary actor shared screen space with many popular actresses and gave us several memorable films to cherish.

One of them is Hema Malini. The duo first worked together in Johny Mera Naam (1970) which turned out to be a huge hit. Later, they went on to do films like Shareef Badmaash, Joshila, Chhupa Rustam and Amir Garib.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Hema remembered Dev Anand as one of her favourite co-stars and said that she has sweet memories associated with him.

The veteran actress recalled, “I never faced any problem with him. He was sweet and playful on set, and every scene was done without any tension. There are some actors who induce tension while working. But that was not the case for Dev sahab.”

Calling him a very lovely human and a ‘very respectful and dignified’ person, she said that he never interfered in anyone’s matter.

Hema shared, “He used to encourage me, ‘Come on, Hema, keep working. Aur kya hi rakha hai life mein’. And what a handsome persona. Aaj tak unke jaise koi nahi aaya. He was the one and only. It is really sad that we have lost such gems in all these years.”

The actress revealed that he was already restless to work and would walk up and down on set with a stick in his hand and sharing his plan for the day with the crew.

“He would only talk about work, and how we can be better. He would talk about it non-stop. His style of acting was different. Be it a sad scene or angry scene or an emotional one, he would add his own unique touch to him. He was a perfectionist in everything, and ensured he looked good while doing that. He used to start work on time and end on time. If I was late, he would say, ‘koi baat nahi, scene khatam kar dene’, subtly telling me not to call off my day without completing my scenes,” Hema fondly remembered.

Further, she revealed that she never saw him getting angry except for one instance when actor Prem Nath misbehaved with a junior artist after getting drunk on the sets of Shareef Badmaash. The actress recalled Dev Anand lashing out at him and said that everyone on the set was terrified at that moment because they never saw him in such a mood.”

The veteran star signed off by saying that in today’s era, no one can act like him. She added that no one can copy or replace him as there was just one Dev Anand.
