Katrina Kaif, at the beginning of her career, often received flak for her poor Hindi speaking skills. With time, the actress polished her language abilities and now speaks the lingo quite fluently.

Director Anees Bazmee, in a recent interview, revealed that Katrina‘s voice in his 2007 blockbuster film Welcome was dubbed by someone else. Explaining the reason behind the same, the filmmaker revealed that he wanted to help the actress as she was still learning Hindi back then and didn’t have a clear diction.

Anees told The Lallantop, “We got her voice dubbed in Welcome and in Singh is Kinng, she dubbed for herself. She was learning then. She would learn and work hard so we also thought that we should help her but her diction wasn’t very clear then so it sounded a bit odd.”

The ‘No Entry’ director further said that at one point, they even thought of giving Katrina’s character in the film a backstory to justify her diction, but then decided to drop that idea as it felt like a ‘bit of manipulation’.

We thought of giving her a backstory that she has lived abroad all her life but it felt like a bit of manipulation so we decided to dub her voice,” Anees said in his interview.

Interestingly, years ago, in an interview with a leading tabloid, Katrina had denied claims of using a dubbing artist in her early films. Instead, the actress had credited Jackie Shroff for advising her to learn the Devnagri script, and acknowledged her co-stars’ help in learning Hindi.

Coming back to Anees Bazmee, his 2007 entertainer Welcome was a huge commercial success at the box office, and over the years has made its place in Hindi pop culture. Currently, the filmmaker is busy with the promotions of his upcoming horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 starring Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit. Katrina Kaif, on the other hand, was last seen in Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas alongside Vijay Sethupathi.
