Triptii Dimri caught everyone’s attention with Sajid Ali’s Laila Majnu (2018) in which she was paired opposite Avinash Tiwary. The film, upon its release, met with a lukewarm response, but over the years grew upon the audience. So much so, that recently when it re-released in theatres, it ran houseful shows.

In a recent interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, Triptii reflected upon her journey, and shared how she was nervous during her debut film.

The actress shared, “I just wanted to do something different. I was never academically good. I told my parents I was going to give it (modelling) a try.” She said that her parents were initially quite scared about her decision to move to Mumbai as she was a shy, introverted who never stepped out of Delhi. They were unhappy with her decision to pursue modelling or enter into films. However, despite their objections, she went ahead to dabble with modelling as she didn’t want to regret anything later.

The actress started going auditions for roles, and eventually bagged Poster Boys (2017), starring Bobby Deol, Sunny Deol and Shreyas Talpade.

Triptii candidly confessed that she found it extremely difficult, as she lacked knowledge about acting and the industry terms, and that even reflected in her performance.

She said, “I didn’t know the meaning of DOP (director of photography) or what a POV (point-of-view) shot was. I didn’t perform well in it because I didn’t know the ‘a’ of acting.”

In 2018, Triptii was roped in to play the leading lady in Laila Majnu. Interestingly, she initially failed the audition for the film but was called back due to her striking facial features, which are reminiscent of Kashmiris. However, even after bagging the part of Laila, she was nervous about whether she would be able to pull it off.

“Even then, I didn’t know acting. I would sit in workshops with my director Sajid Ali and Avinash Tiwary, and they would have discussions on acting, backstory and characterisations. I would just sit there, blank-faced, not knowing anything. I would go home and cry thinking, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’ because I didn’t understand what they were saying or their language,” said Triptii. She continued, “But I was too scared. When you’re there and not getting anything, you feel like you are a fool, right? I would feel like a fool every single day,” she said in her interview.

Triptii is currently busy with the promotions of her upcoming film, Vidya Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, co-starring Rajkummar Rao. She also has Kartik Aaryan-Vidya Balan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 lined up for release.
