While Sonu Nigam has many popular songs to his credit, it was ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ from Subhash Ghai’s 1997 Pardes which was a major turning point in his career. The heartbreak song picturised on Shah Rukh Khan is considered to be one of Sonu’s most iconic tracks.

Recently, in a chat with Bollywood Hungama, Sonu shared an interesting trivia about this song which apparently has a Michael Jackson connection.

The singer said that after the massive success of his song ‘Achha Sila Diya’, he was fed up as he was only offered sad songs and joked that these tracks had words like ‘kafan, dafan, laash, shamshaan ghat, kabristan’. He was looking forward to do some tempo songs when Nadeem-Shravan approached him to sing ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ for Pardes.

Sonu recalled, “I had told them I can do it. I can do Western also. When they had an opportunity with Ye Dil Deewana, they suggested Subhash Ghai my name. So, I started getting new age songs thanks to Nadeem-Sharavan.”

Besides the catchy lyrics, the song is also remembered for Sonu’s passionate “ah” which according to the singer was a hat-tip to popstar Michael Jackson.

He shared, “The ‘ah’ in the song, that was me copying Michael Jackson’s style. I wouldn’t understand what he would sing except for his ‘ahs’ in the songs. So, during Ye Dil, I thought it can go perfectly well here. Subhash ji really liked it and said, ‘Ye toh bada badmaash ladka hai!‘ He liked that I was singing with so much power.”

Pardes, helmed by Subhash Ghai, featured Shah Rukh Khan, Mahima Chaudhry, Apoorva Agnihotri and Amrish Puri in pivotal roles.
