Vidya Balan, in a new interview, spoke about how she felt like her faith was being tested when she was either dropped out of or replaced in many projects at the beginning of her career.

With several versatile performances to her credit in her 18-year long career, Vidya Balan has established herself as a name to reckon with in the Hindi film industry. However, the journey hasn’t been easy for the ‘Parineeta’ actress. Recently, in a new interview, Vidya admitted that she felt that her faith was being put to test when she was lost many projects at the beginning of her career. She also recalled being labelled as a ‘black cat’ in the South film industry when a film that she had signed with Mohanlal failed to take off.

While speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Vidya shared that she would visit a Sai Baba temple near her house and vent her frustration.

“Within a span of three years, there was one film where I was literally thrown out after shooting for a week. There were two films that got shelved midway, and there were nine other films in which I got replaced. It was a very tough time. I’m someone who prays a lot, and I was heartbroken,” the Jalsa star recalled.

She further continued, “I had these conversations with God. I had this Sai Baba mandir close to my house in Chembur, and I would go there when there was no one around at night. I would sit there and have conversations with Baba, and say, ‘Why did you dangle the carrot in front of me, if this is what you were going to do?’ I couldn’t understand it. I hadn’t done anything wrong, and I felt like I was being punished for something I hadn’t done.”

Vidya admitted that she felt her faith was being put to test after she faced these disappointments. In fact, there was a time when she actually started to believe that she was ‘jinxed’ when she was dropped for the first time from an ad film, after having around 70-odd commercials under her belt. The actress also shared that she had worked with late Irrfan Khan in an anthology show, but it was only their episode which failed to make it to the telecast.

However, Vidya also added that she believes that facing these obstacles was an important experience for her to have, because without it, she wouldn’t be where she is now.

Currently, the actress is gearing up for the release of her upcoming murder mystery Neeyat, helmed by Anu Menon.
