Did you know the makers of Dil had initially rejected the opening lines ‘Mujhe neend na aaye, mujhe chain na aaye’ of Aamir Khan-Madhuri Dixit’s iconic track?

Imagine being told that the line you just wrote for a major blockbuster is too boring, generic, and unoriginal. That is exactly what happened during the making of the 1990 classic Dil, starring Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit.
In a throwback interview with CNN-News 18, veteran lyricist Sameer Anjaan once revealed that when wrote the opening words “Mujhe neend na aaye, mujhe chain na aaye” for the film’s lead romantic track, director Indra Kumar and the producers reacted with instant rejection. To them, the phrase sounded like something recycled from dozens of older romance tracks and lacked the fresh energy needed for their lead pair.
Determined to satisfy the makers, Sameer went back to his desk. He ended up writing nearly 20 mukhdas (alternative opening lines) to replace that single phrase. Each new version carried strong poetic thought, but a major technical hurdle stood in the way. Sameer was writing words to fit a pre-composed, fast-paced tune by music directors Anand-Milind.
The lyricist shared, “Because I was writing the song on a tune that was not written by me first, the words didn’t sound good on the tune.”

While the new poetic lines looked great on paper, none matched the natural phonetic bounce and rhythmic flow of the original phrase. Every attempt to sing the new options felt clumsy and forced against the upbeat melody. Ironically the rejected line was the only one that fit. With deadlines closing in the team reluctantly recorded the song using the discarded phrase. They treated it as a temporary fix with full plans to scrap the track if audiences reacted poorly upon release.
However, what happened next was nothing short of magic. When Dil released in theatres, the rejected placeholder exploded into a massive youth anthem across the country and dominated music charts. What was once considered too ordinary became the heartbeat of Bollywood romance.
“And that very line actually became a hit, finally because it had an emotional connection with everyone. Now if you remove that line, then whatever else you write there, the subsequent lines won’t work,” Sameer recalled.
