Suniel Shetty recalled how he reconsidered his acting career after one of the topmost critics passed a harsh comment post the release of his debut film, Balwaan.

Suniel Shetty made his debut in Hindi cinema with Deepak Anand’s 1992 film Balwaan alongside Divya Bharti. The film was declared a hit and the actor went on to establish himself as popular action hero in Bollywood. In a career spanning over three decades, Suniel went on to feature in several memorable films.

In a recent podcast ‘The Barber Shop’ with Shantanu, the Dhadkan actor recalled how a prominent critic harshly criticized his acting skills and suggested that he should ‘go back to selling idlis’ after his debut film hit the big screens.

Suniel shared, “When my first film released, one of the topmost critics then said, ‘He should go back to selling idlis.’ And these are the words and this is his reviews: ‘He will never make it.’ The film was blockbuster, my film was a hit. Suniel Shetty was accepted as that action hero, but here’s someone, the most powerful publication writing, saying go back home. I said, ‘this is no fair’ because every kid believes that he is the next Mr Bachchan.”

The actor admitted that the critic’s harsh review made him question whether pursuing a career in acting was the right choice for him.

“When I analyzed it, I have done six days of acting school. No drama, no play. I was just one tree in school in that one play. He was very harsh, which he didn’t need to be. But then when I went back, I said, ‘maybe this career might not go anywhere, so let me stay invested in business because you need a backup,” Shetty said in the podcast.

On the work front, Suniel Shetty was recently seen in Dharavi Bank and Hunterr: Tootega Nahi Todega. His upcoming project is Hera Pheri 3 which has him reuniting with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal.
