Kangana Ranaut, in a recent interview, narrated how she had nearly lost out on her debut film, Anurag Basu’s Gangster before she was finally cast in it.

Kangana Ranaut made a smashing entry in Bollywood with Anurag Basu’s 2006 romantic thriller, Gangster. The film upon its release had received positive response with rave reviews for her ‘enigmatic’ performance as a debutante.

But do you guys know that Kangana had almost lost Gangster to Chitrangda Singh after being finalised to play Simran because Mahesh Bhatt, who was one of the producers of this film, felt that she was ‘too young’ for the role? The actress made this revelation when she recently made an appearance on Rajat Sharma’s talk show, Aap Ki Adaalat.

Kangana recalled, “Anurag Basu had made the hit film Murder (2004) before Gangster. He was looking for a new actress for his new film, and I was giving a lot of auditions at that time. I went to their studio located in Juhu for the audition. Anurag was also there, and he told me that he had received my photos. Then he asked me to do a few things. First, he asked me to do a drunk scene. After that, he asked me to show how I cried. Then, he asked me to say a couple of dialogues. I did what was told and was sent home after that.”

She continued, “A few days later, I got a call from Anurag and was told that I had been finalised. Then after a few days, Anurag called me and told me, ‘You have lost the role’. He said that Mahesh Bhatt Saab is not agreeing as he thinks that you are too young for this role. Anurag even said that Chitrangda has been cast for my role. But then Chitrangda, for whatever reasons, was not picking up the phone so the role ended up in my bag.”

Besides Kangana Ranaut, Gangster also starred Emraan Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja in pivotal roles. The film revolves around a gangster’s alcoholic moll who falls for another man but there’s a twist. The film is still remembered for its chartbuster songs.

Cut to present, Kangana Ranaut’s next release is Emergency. Besides playing the lead role, she has also directed the film.
