As Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein clocks 25 years, Dia Mirza reflects on Reena’s choice between Maddy and Sam, consent, and modern relationship dynamics.
Twenty-five years after its release, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM) continues to inspire discussions among moviegoers and pop culture enthusiasts. At the centre of these conversations remains a question that has followed the film for years. Should Reena have ultimately chosen Maddy, played by R Madhavan, or Sam (Saif Ali Khan), who appeared to be the more mature, successful and emotionally secure choice?
For Dia Mirza, however, Reena’s decision cannot simply be reduced to a comparison between two men and their respective strengths. Speaking to Variety India, the actress recently offered a more nuanced perspective on the love triangle and why audiences remain so invested in it even after 25 years.
“I don’t think love has ever followed a checklist. Someone can be wonderful on paper and yet not be the person your heart connects with,” Dia observed.
According the actress, Sam certainly had qualities that made him an appealing partner. He brought warmth, stability and dignity to Reena’s life. Yet her emotional connection with Maddy existed on an entirely different plane. It was intense, instinctive and difficult to measure through conventional ideas of compatibility.
Dia was only nineteen when she played Reena, and she recalled understanding “the magic of that overwhelming, all-consuming first love.” Her perspective on relationships, however, has evolved with time. Looking at the film today, she believes “lasting love needs trust, emotional maturity, friendship and mutual respect.”
That distinction offers a more interesting way of examining Reena’s eventual choice.
“Perhaps the question isn’t whether Reena chose the wrong man. It’s whether Maddy was willing to grow into the partner she deserved. Because falling in love is one thing. Learning how to love someone well is quite another,” Dia explained.
It also places Maddy’s actions under a considerably different lens. His romantic pursuit, which was embraced by the audience 25 years ago, included impersonation, dishonesty, aggressive college ragging and persistent stalking. Viewed through contemporary ideas surrounding consent and personal boundaries, several of those actions inevitably invite uncomfortable questions.
If Reena were meeting Maddy through a dating app in 2026, therefore, chemistry might not be the only consideration before deciding whether to swipe right.
Dia herself acknowledged how significantly the understanding of romantic relationships has changed.
“The way we understand relationships, consent and personal boundaries has evolved, and rightly so. There are aspects of Maddy’s behavior that we romanticized in cinema 25 years ago that we must question today. Impersonation, dishonesty and refusing to respect someone’s boundaries cannot be justified in the name of love,” she said.
Yet questioning Maddy’s behaviour does not necessarily diminish the emotions that made RHTDM resonate so strongly with audiences. The actress continued, “But I also think audiences connected with the vulnerability, intensity and emotional longing of these characters.”
A contemporary version of Maddy, therefore, would require more than charm and persistence to win Reena’s heart. According to Dia, he would need “the courage to be honest about his feelings, respect Reena’s choices, and understand that love isn’t about possessing someone.”
Her observations also move the long running Maddy versus Sam debate beyond the simple question of who was the better man.
Sam being the more dependable choice on paper does not automatically mean Reena had to love him. At the same time, Reena’s powerful connection with Maddy does not excuse the deception and disregard for boundaries that accompanied his pursuit of her.
Perhaps this is precisely why Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein continues to invite discussion after 25 years. The emotions remain familiar, while the way audiences interpret those emotions has changed.
