Jackie Shroff broke his silence on Baby John’s poor performance at the box office.
Varun Dhawan’s actioner Baby John turned out to be one of the biggest box office disappointments of 2024. The film, which marked the directorial debut of Atlee’s assistant Kalees, failed to live up to the expectations of the audience. After Rajpal Yadav, Jackie Shroff, who essayed the role of the main antagonist, reflected upon the film’s dismal performance at the box office.
In a chat with India Today digital, Jackie expressed concern for the producers and said, “The producers do get affected. They put in a lot of money with trust in these projects. And when they do not recover it, that is sad. As actors, of course, you want to be liked for your performance but you also want it to work well.”
On being asked if Baby John‘s failure impacted him personally after being in the industry for so many years, the actor explained, “You do feel bad but not for yourself, but the producers. You tend to do your job with sincerity, but the people who have put in the money, you have to think about them too.”
Baby John, an adaptation of Atlee-Vijay’s 2016 Tamil hit Theri, was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 180 Crore. Sadly, the Varun Dhawan starrer couldn’t barely cross Rs 50-Crore mark at the box office. Besides Varun and Jackie, Baby John also marked the Hindi film debut of Keerthy Suresh and featured Wamiqa Gabbi in a prominent role.
On the work front, Jackie Shroff has Vivek Chauhan’s directorial Baap in the pipeline. The movie also stars Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt and Mithun Chakraborty. The official announcement for this film was made in June 2022.
