Imtiaz Ali revealed why he chose an OTT release for his upcoming film, Amar Singh Chamkila instead of opting for a theatrical route.

After the lackluster performance of his last release, Love Aaj Kal in 2020, all eyes are now towards Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film, Amar Singh Chamkila starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in leading roles.

Ever since the announcement of this film, there has been a lot of buzz around it. Amidst this, Imtiaz surprised everyone by choosing to release this Diljit-Parineeti starrer directly on Netflix instead of cinema halls.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Imtiaz explained the reason behind the same and said, “Well, new things come along and you must try it… I believe that I am like a big cinema watcher, like a theatre viewer and a director. When I close my eyes and think about a film, I always imagine myself on the big screen in a theatre and watching the big screen. I can’t help it, but I don’t think that will be a bad thing for a film I made for an OTT.”

He added, “So, it’s a new thing and I feel that there is a certain reach and the point of making Chamkila for me, I am a Hindi film director. I thought making this film in Hindi was necessary because it is a very big and universal subject. So, I wanted people who are not from Punjab should also see it and enjoy it. People perhaps that are not from this country and don’t even speak these native languages should be able to enjoy it. So, that’s the reason why we made Chamkila in Hindi, that’s not your question, but that’s my answer.”

In the same interview, the ‘Tamasha’ director also shared that he initially unsure about casting Diljit Dosanjh as Amar Singh Chamkila as he thought that he won’t be able to pull it off. However, later when he finally approached him for the role, it turned out to be a different chapter.

Ali said that now when he watches Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra together or separately, he feels that there could be nobody who could play Chamkila or Amarjot except for these actors.

Amar Singh Chamkila is slated to release on April 12 on Netflix.
