R Madhavan recalled how heartbroken he felt when his 2001 film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein failed to perform well at the box office.
Gautham Menon’s Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein starring R Madhavan, Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan has earned a cult status over the years, and is a favourite with the rom-com lovers. Surprisingly, when the film initially released in 2001, it didn’t fare well at the box office.
Recently when the film’s leading man R Madhavan attended the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa for the premiere of his film Hisaab Barabar, the actor walked down the memory lane in a chat with ANI, and recalled how disappointed he was when Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein‘s failure at the box office.
Madhavan shared, “When it first released, it didn’t do well; it was a flop. So I remember being heartbroken. I had gone to all the temples and made sure I had left no stone unturned to make the film the way it was supposed to, but it was heartbreaking. Little did I realize that fortune and fate had a big story for me.”

Further, the ‘Shaitaan’ actor said that it feels wonderful that the film was re-released after 25 years and earned more that it did during its original run. For the unversed, the Madhavan-Dia Mirza starrer saw a re-release in cinema halls in August this year to mark the film’s 25th anniversary.
Speaking about it, Madhavan said, “It (re)released after 25 years and made more money than it did originally. It’s wonderful to be recognised for doing a film 25 years later.”
Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil, helmed by Gautham Menon, was a remake of the director’s own Tamil film Minnale which featured Madhavan, Reema Sen and Abbas. Madhavan reprised his role in the Hindi remake as well. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein marked Dia Mirza’s debut in Bollywood.
