Anurag Kashyap, in a new interview, said that he should have made Bombay Velvet the way Vikramaditya Motwane recently helmed the acclaimed web series, Jubilee.

Anurag Kashyap’s ambitious film, Bombay Velvet starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar was one of the most anticipated movies of 2023. Unfortunately, the period film turned out to be a massive disaster upon its release. In a recent interaction with a leading tabloid, the director reflected upon the film’s failure and said that Bombay Velvet would have flourished if its budget was less.

While speaking with ETimes, Anurag said that he should have made Bombay Velvet the way Vikramaditya Motwane recently made the OTT series, Jubilee.

The publication quoted him as saying, “I saw Jubilee recently and seeing what Motwane has pulled off, I realized what I should have done in Bombay Velvet. Instead of being overwhelmed by the budget that I was given for the film, had I looked at it as an ambitious 300-Crore film that I was to made in 90 Crore, I would have flourished.”

According to Kashyap, he would have made a ‘stronger’ film if he had a more controlled budget. The filmmaker shared, “It would have been a low-budget product at that cost and I would have been on the edge and would have made a multiple times stronger film.”

Anurag told the publication that after watching Vikramaditya Motwane pull off ten hours of Jubilee at a lesser cost keeping in mind the inflation, he realized that his film, Bombay Velvet lacked the ambition that it should have had.

Bombay Velvet marked filmmaker Karan Johar’s acting debut. Talking about casting him as the main antagonist Kaizaad Khambatta, the director said, “Karan Johar, I still maintain was a good choice. He didn’t let me down, I let him down.”

Bombay Velvet clocked eight years on May 15, 2023. Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap’s next directorial, Kennedy, starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone is all set to premier at Cannes this year.
