Ananya Panday has this to say when asked about netizens comparing her upcoming web-series, Call Me Bae with international shows like Emily In Paris and 2 Broke Girls.

Ananya Panday is the latest addition to the list of Bollywood actors foraying into the digital space. The actress is all set to make her web debut with Amazon Prime’s upcoming series, Call Me Bae which will stream on September 6, 2024.

When the trailer of Ananya‘s digital debut hit the internet, users on social media platforms like X and Reddit pointed out that the show’s theme reminded them of Lily Collin’s Netflix comedy-drama series, Emily In Paris, and Beth Behrs-Kat Denning’s sitcom, 2 Broke Girls.

Emily In Paris revolves around a Chicago marketing executive who after landing her dream job in Paris, embraces her adventurous new life while juggling work, friends and romance. On the other hand, 2 Broke Girls, revolves around two waitresses who strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business.

In an interview with News18 Showsha, Ananya reacted to Call Me Bae’s comparisons with these shows from the west and said, “Just because this is the genre or the theme of the show, doesn’t mean it is the copy of something else. It’s like, if there’s a romcom that’s already been made, it doesn’t make it a copy. It is following a similar format or genre. It’s a template.”

She continued, “I don’t like the fact that when something is made in Hollywood and then it’s made in India, people call it the sasta version of that. Why can’t you be proud of the content that is coming from your own country? You sit and watch these shows for hours. But it is coming from your own country… Without watching it, don’t judge it is what I would say.”

Ananya further said that the best part of Call Me Bae are its characters, adding that even though the template of the show maybe chick-flick or that format, all the characters in it are so wonderfully unique. She told the publication that people will relate to the show once they watch it.

Besides Ananya Panday, Call Me Bae also stars Vir Das, Varun Sood, Gurfateh Pirzada, Muskkaan Jaferi, Vihaan Samat, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Lisa Mishra and Mini Mathur.
