Thirty-six years ago, Indra Kumar’s Dil hit theaters and turned its lead pair, Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit, into major superstars. The film remains etched in Bollywood history for its youthful energy and chart‑topping music.

Recently, in a chat with Variety India, Indra Kumar recalled an interesting behind‑the‑scenes moment from Dil while addressing whether he and Aamir Khan ever had creative differences on the sets.

He clarified that there were no major disagreements, but they did have a discussion about one particular scene — the one where Aamir Khan’s Raja breaks a stool, sets a fire, and gets married to Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) on the spot.

According to Kumar, Aamir felt that breaking the stool might look unrealistic, and he admitted that logically it was. However, Kumar was convinced that the way the scene was shot and performed would win over the audience. His instincts proved right, as the moment became a showstopper, drawing claps and even tears from viewers when it unfolded on screen.

He acknowledged that Aamir’s concern was fair from a logical standpoint, but emphasized that he knew the audience he was dealing with and was confident they would love it.

Further, Indra Kumar also revealed that the idea for Dil originated from a character in his father’s play that he was very fond of — a miser. He said he took inspiration from that character, named him Hazari Prasad (later played by Anupam Kher), and then built the entire story around him.

Released in 1990, Dil revolves around Raja (Aamir Khan) and Madhu (Madhuri Dixit), two college rivals whose fiery clashes slowly turn into love, only to be tested by family opposition and dramatic twists. The film was a major box office success.
