Vikramaditya Motwane, who assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Devdas, shared how Shah Rukh Khan was always brimming with ideas on the sets of the film.
Before becoming a filmmaker, Vikramaditya Motwane assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali on movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. Recently in an interview with The Lallantop, the Lootera director recalled his experience of working with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Devdas.
Speaking about how SRK’s mind is constantly working, irrespective of the situation he is in, Motwane narrated an incident where the Bollywood superstar came up with an interesting idea to lend authenticity to his death sequence in Devdas.
The director recalled, “We were shooting the climax of Devdas where Shah Rukh’s character dies while Aishwarya comes running to him. Shah Rukh was lying down under a tree. Suddenly, he asked one of the assistants if we could get him some honey. We were all clueless. Yet, we brought it to him. When we did, he took some of it and applied it over his face. He did it to get flies on his face like flies are sitting on a dying man’s face. This was completely his idea.”
Further lauding King Khan, he continued, “The man’s mind is constantly working to think about how he can make the moment better. And that is Shah Rukh Khan. He does very small things in films that make a great difference. Plus, he makes everybody feel very special.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas is a cinematic adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s popular Bengali novel of the same name. Besides Shah Rukh Khan, the period romantic film also features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in pivotal roles.
After working as an assistant director to Bhansali, Vikramaditya Motwane made his directorial debut with Udaan in 2010. His latest series Black Warrant is currently streaming on Netflix.
