Suriya reveals why he had to reshoot the climax of Karuppu in just two days after director RJ Balaji called him six months after the film wrapped up.
Tamil superstar Suriya recently shared an astonishing behind-the-scenes revelation about the making of his film Karuppu, proving just how far he is willing to go for his craft.
During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India alongside his wife Jyotika, the actor revealed that the film’s intense climax scene was actually filmed six months after the movie was completely finished. What makes it even more surprising is that the entire climax was re-shot in just two days after director RJ Balaji came up with a brand new idea at the last minute.
Suriya recalled that he was in Hyderabad shooting his next movie, Vishwanath and Sons, when Balaji suddenly called him. The editing for Karuppu was already locked and Suriya had even shaved his beard for his new role. But Balaji admitted he was not happy with the old climax and wanted to try a much better concept. Without thinking twice, the Tamil star quickly traveled from Hyderabad to Chennai to give the director the two days he needed to shoot the new ending.
When Suriya reached the set, he saw a big statue of Karuppasamy placed behind the camera. Realizing how much energy the scene needed, the actor prayed to the statue, asking for guidance to play the role with real passion. To prepare for the intense scene on short notice, Suriya got help from YouTube videos. He watched videos of people at village festivals who believe a god’s spirit has entered their body, paying close attention to how they moved and spoke.
By studying those real-life festival videos, Suriya learned how to move his body and express deep emotion naturally. He used those real gestures and expressions during his performance, fitting them right in between the dance steps and action moments. Shot with lots of hard work and prayer, the team finished the new climax in just forty-eight hours.
Touted to be a fantasy action drama, the film revolves around how the guardian deity Vettai Karuppu disguises himself as a lawyer to fight corruption in the court system and deliver justice to a helpless family. Besides directing the film, RJ Balaji features as the main antagonist. The film also stars Trisha Krishnan.
