When the trailer for Varun Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai dropped online, the social media went into a frenzy when they discovered Mouni Roy playing Varun Dhawan’s onscreen ‘fake mother’ in the film. They questioned the casting choice, pointing to the minimal age gap between the two actors.

Now, for the first time, post the film’s release, Mouni has responded to this criticism in an interaction with News18. She said that she chose to focus on her work rather than the digital chatter.

Mouni explained that she couldn’t do anything about the trolling and chose not to pay attention to the noise or what people were saying. She mentioned that it had become a big issue, with many questioning how the makers could cast her in such a role, but she was confident about what she had done in the film.

The Brahmastra actress added that she knew her director was very happy with her work, as were all the people she collaborated with on the project.

While expressing her excitement about working on the comic caper, Mouni shared that she has always been a huge David Dhawan fan and considers his films her comfort watch. She revealed that this was her first attempt at comedy, and the makers intentionally kept her away from promotions to build curiosity about her role.

Mouni candidly shared that she too was surprised when casting director Mukesh Chhabra first told her about the role.

“My first reaction was also that. I was like, ‘His mother?’ Then I went and took a narration from David sir and Farhad Samji, who’s the writer of the film,” she told the publication.

But after hearing the narration from David Dhawan and writer Farhad Samji, she laughed so much that she immediately decided to take on the role. The Nagin actress further recalled scenes where Varun’s character demanded a Nirupa Roy–like mother, only for her to appear in short dresses and even a bikini, leading to hilarious contradictions on screen.

Despite the backlash, Mouni emphasized that she was thrilled to collaborate with actors like Jimmy Sheirgill, Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, and Maniesh Paul, and that the comic chaos of the film was exactly what drew her in. For her, the joy of experimenting with comedy and working with David Dhawan outweighed the trolling.

On the work front, Mouni Roy’s web series, Ab Hoga Hisaab, recently premiered on MX Player.
