Read how Manoj Bajpayee fought a reluctant Ram Gopal Varma to get Shefali Shah cast as Pyaari Mhatre in Satya.
Manoj said, “I can take this credit openly. I mentioned Shefali’s name to Ramu. He wasn’t convinced because of his own experience with her in Rangeela. But I put my foot down because the wife’s casting was still not finalized.”
Shefali, who had already made a mark on TV with Naya Nukkad and Tara, had only a fleeting Bollywood appearance as Gulbadan in Rangeela. Bajpayee knew her personally through Harsh Chhaya, his Swabhimaan co-star, and remembered their early days of partying together as young actors.
That nostalgia turned into conviction. Bajpayee insisted until Varma relented, and Shefali walked into Satya. The actor further explained that Shefali had added subtle details to her role and also made the chemistry between them look wonderful. He stressed that it was her contribution which enhanced the entire film.
Manoj Bajpayee’s role as Bhiku Mhatre in Satya is remembered as one of the most iconic performances in Indian cinema. He brought a mix of raw energy, charm, and unpredictability to the character, making him feel real and unforgettable.
This Ram Gopal Varma directorial tells the story of a man named Satya who comes to Mumbai in search of work but gets pulled into the city’s underworld, where his friendship with gangster Bhiku Mhatre leads to crime, betrayal, and tragedy. Besides Manoj Bajpayee and Shefali Shah, the film also stars JD Chakravarty, Urmila Matondkar and Saurabh Shukla.
