Manoj Bajpayee’s journey with Ram Gopal Varma is full of fascinating twists, and one of the most underrated stories is how Shefali Shah became Pyaari Mhatre in Satya (1998).
In a recent interview with Indian Express. Bajpayee revealed that he had first auditioned for Paresh Rawal’s role Pinky in Daud. But Varma, impressed by his raw intensity in Bandit Queen, promised him something bigger. True to his word, the filmmaker gave him the role of Pushkar in Daud and later the iconic Bhiku Mhatre in Satya. But when it came to Bhiku’s wife, Varma wasn’t sold on Bajpayee’s suggestion.

Manoj said, “I can take this credit openly. I mentioned Shefali’s name to Ramu. He wasn’t convinced because of his own experience with her in Rangeela. But I put my foot down because the wife’s casting was still not finalized.”

Shefali, who had already made a mark on TV with Naya Nukkad and Tara, had only a fleeting Bollywood appearance as Gulbadan in Rangeela. Bajpayee knew her personally through Harsh Chhaya, his Swabhimaan co-star, and remembered their early days of partying together as young actors.

That nostalgia turned into conviction. Bajpayee insisted until Varma relented, and Shefali walked into Satya. The actor further explained that Shefali had added subtle details to her role and also made the chemistry between them look wonderful. He stressed that it was her contribution which enhanced the entire film.
