Bollywood is full of stories about tracks taking months of planning, but sometimes a classic is born out of nowhere. That is exactly what happened with the hit song ‘Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha’ from Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na (2004).

In a recent interview with Mashable India, music director, Anu Malik, recently shared the crazy story of how this track was made. It all started when the director, Farah Khan, showed up at his studio at 8:00 in the morning because she was in a huge rush before a film shoot.

Farah told him that she needed a great love song for Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen. Anu Malik wanted to create something completely new and modern for that era, not the usual slow love songs people were used to hearing.

When Farah sat down, Anu Malik started playing a tune on his harmonium, but he was singing it very slowly. Farah, who is a famous dance choreographer, instantly saw the potential but knew it needed more energy. She told him to speed up the tempo and make it fast.

As soon as he picked up the pace, the song changed completely. Anu Malik said he could suddenly picture Spanish flamenco dancers moving to the rhythm. Farah loved it so much that she immediately called the legendary writer Javed Akhtar to pen the lyrics.

When he arrived and heard the tune, he did something unusual. Instead of writing the main chorus first, he wanted to hear the verse. Anu Malik always believed that the verses of a song should be just as beautiful as the main chorus, so he played it gladly. Javed Akhtar loved the melody so much that he wrote the verses (antra) first, starting with lines, “Itni kyun tum haseen ho, tum ho jo dekhe gumsum ho, dekho na main bhi hoon khoya sa jaaga sa deewangi…” before creating the famous mukhda, “Tumhe jo maine dekha, tumhe jo maine jaana, jo hosh tha wo to gaya… badan ki ye khushboo jagaane lagi jaadu, jo ho gaya bekaabu dil kho gaya.”

The final track became a massive hit, filled with Spanish acoustic guitars and beautiful violin strings. Anu Malik explained that he never uses strict classical rules or formulas when he sits down to create music. He just feels the situation, looks at the world around him, and lets the music flow naturally.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Amrita Rao and Zayed Khan, Main Hoon Na tells the story of Major Ram, an Indian Army officer who goes undercover as a college student to protect his general’s daughter from a militant while also trying to reunite with his estranged half‑brother. The film marked Farah Khan’s directorial debut.
