Shankar Mahadevan reveals how the iconic ‘Tumhi Dekho Naa’ song from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was made at the last minute with zero instruments.
Every Bollywood buff remembers the sheer magic of ‘Tumhi Dekho Naa‘ song from Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). The color-coordinated sarees, the misty New York backdrop, Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji’s palpable chemistry, and that hauntingly beautiful melody, makes it a favourite with fans even today.
But what if we told you this timeless anthem was last-minute gamble born in a living room with absolutely zero musical instruments!
In a recent interview with Indian Express, Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio, walked down the memory lane and shared how this song was conceived.
He revealed that ‘Tumhi Dekho Naa’ was actually a last‑minute addition to the film. He said there was a romantic‑song situation and director Karan Johar was very particular about what he wanted.
Although they had created a few options, none of them felt right to Karan, who kept saying that something was not working.
Shankar recalled that he and Karan then went to lyricist Javed Akhtar’s house, where they sat together trying to figure out what to do without any instruments. At that moment, Shankar remembered a musical piece Loy had composed for the film and suggested using it as the love song and developing something around it. Javed Akhtar immediately liked the idea and, right there, came up with the line “Tumhi dekho na… yeh kya ho gaya.” Shankar added that everything fell into place almost instantly after that.
Decades have passed, but this song, sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, remains one of Bollywood’s most soulful love tracks.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehnaa follows two married strangers in New York who, despite their troubled marriages, find themselves drawn to each other. The film features Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, and Amitabh Bachchan in prominent roles.
