Choreographer Ganesh Hegde reveals the untold story behind ‘It’s Magic’ song from Hrithik Roshan-Preity Zinta’s Koi…Mil Gaya.
There are very few Bollywood songs that have the kind of nostalgic pull that the iconic ‘It’s Magic’ song from Hrithik Roshan-Preity Zinta starrer Koi…Mil Gaya (2003) has. But behind the effortless charm of Hrithik Roshan’s dance moves lies a story of grit, pain and determination.
In a throwback interview with Rediff, choreographer Ganesh Hegde admitted that the choreography of this popular number wasn’t easy. Hrithik was playing Rohit, a mentally challenged boy who suddenly gets special powers.
Ganesh said he wanted the superstar to look “cute” while dancing. So, they made him start with silly, clumsy steps at the dance competition. Then, as the song built up, Hrithik switched to sharp, stylish moves that showed his real talent. This change made the performance magical.
However, the shoot was not easy. Hrithik had a fever that day, had just done painful action stunts, and was still taking pills to keep going.
Ganesh remembered that retakes were very hard for him, but Hrithik never gave up. His dedication showed why he is called one of Bollywood’s best dancers. All the hard work paid off. ‘It’s Magic’ became a huge hit and even won the Zee Cine Award for Best Choreography.
Helmed by Rakesh Roshan, Koi…Mil Gaya revolves around Rohit (Hrithik Roshan), a kind‑hearted but mentally challenged young man who befriends an alien named Jadoo. The latter’s magical powers transform his life and help him overcome obstacles. A massive hit at the box office, Koi…Mil Gaya also launched the blockbuster Krrish franchise.
