David Dhawan, in a recent interview, explained why he never worked with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
In the 1990s, David Dhawan ruled Bollywood’s comedy scene like few others. With his knack for turning everyday situations into laugh‑out‑loud entertainment, he became one of the most prolific filmmakers of the decade. His films, often packed with witty one‑liners, colorful characters, and non‑stop energy, gave audiences a reason to flock to cinema halls.
Whether it was his iconic partnership with Govinda or his blockbuster hits with Salman Khan, Dhawan’s brand of comedy defined an era and made him the go‑to director for feel‑good entertainers. However, one wondered why the filmmaker never teamed up with Bollywood’s Badshah Shah Rukh Khan.
Recently in an interaction with Pinkvilla, Dhawan finally clarified that while there was indeed a time when a collaboration with SRK was being discussed, it never materialized.
“It isn’t like that. I think at one time we were planning to do something together. But I was always busy. I always had two films going on floors at that time). So, it was very difficult… But definitely at one stage it was there,” he said.
The filmmaker further explained that his career was never about consciously choosing certain actors over others.
“It’s not like I decide I will work only with this actor. I worked with Govinda, Salman, Sanjay… it just happened that way,” he explained.
After giving audiences decades of laughter and unforgettable entertainers, the director is now preparing for his next big release, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde.
Shah Rukh Khan, on the other hand, will next be seen in Siddharth Anand’s King.
