Ayushmann Khurrana addressed the criticism over his latest release Dream Girl 2 being ‘regressive’ and added that this film is meant for ‘outright massy comedy commercial single-screen small-town audience’.

Ayushmann Khurrana-Ananya Panday’s Dream Girl 2 hit the theatrical screens last week. The comic caper opened to mixed reactions upon its release. While some lauded Ayushmann’s comic timing, a section of the audience termed the film ‘regressive’.

Recently, in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ayushmann reacted to this criticism. He said that his family entertainer has the same audience as Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and would disappoint those who watch it with a magnifying glass.

The Badhaai Ho actor said,  “The one thing I was clear about was that this film isn’t for those who have a magnifying glass ready in their hands. That was clear. If you can ignore that.”

Calling it a film meant for the outright massy comedy commercial single-screen small-town audience, he continued, ‘It has the same audience as Gadar 2. You can’t apply logic here. There’s a crazy suspension of disbelief in the film.”

“You can’t go into the intricacies of this film. There’s no message as such, but it’s inclusive enough. There’s a slight touch of LGBTQ representation. Abhishek Banerjee’s character says ‘Love is love’ at the end. So there’s acceptance. A Muslim family is marrying into a Sardar, a Hindu. So the mass audience will find it progressive. But those who scan with a magnifying glass will point out mistakes. This film is not for them,” Ayushmann told the entertainment portal.

He further emphasized that as long as a Dream Girl 2 works, he would have the courage to do the more progressive films like Andhadhun, Article 15, and An Action Hero. So far, Dream Girl 2 has collected Rs 67 Crore at the box office.
