Anil Sharma, in a recent interview, clarified that he had never approached Govinda for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.

Way back in 2019, on Rajat Sharma’s popular chat show ‘Aap Ki Aadalat’, Govinda had claimed that he had turned down the offer to play Tara Singh in Anil Sharma’s 2001 blockbuster hit Gadar: Ek Prem Katha as he felt that the script had too many abuses at that point of time.

However, recently, in a chat with Bollywood Thikana, the film’s director Anil Sharma refuted Govinda’s claims of being offered Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. He said that the actor probably misunderstood a conversation they had decades ago when they were working together on Maharaja. Sharma clarified that Sunny Deol was already ‘signed and sealed’ for the role before he had a chat with Govinda regarding the film.

Anil told the publication, “How could it have been Govinda in that role? It was always supposed to be Sunny. The poor guy must have forgotten. I was working with him on something, and I told him I had a story for Sunny Deol. He asked me what it was, and I told him. He said it’s good that I went to Sunny, because he could never have done the movie.”

He continued, “He must’ve thought that since I was telling him the story, I wanted him to do the role. He forgot that I’d already signed Sunny, the deal was done even before we met. It’s like how I met Salman Khan before Gadar 2, and he asked me what I was doing. I told him the story of Gadar 2, and he said that the movie would be a blockbuster. Maybe Govinda forgot. He was a big star back then, he was very busy, he must’ve forgotten this small detail.”

Meanwhile, Anil Sharma’s last directorial was a sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha titled Gadar 2. Starring Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma and Simrat Kaur, the film turned out to be a massive success at the box office.
