Ameesha Patel took a dig at director Anil Sharma after the latter spoke about how the actress was apprehensive about playing a mother-in-law in his 2023 hit film Gadar 2.
Anil Sharma who helmed Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2, recently spoke about how the film’s leading lady Ameesha Patel was initially hesitant to play a mother-in-law in his film. He even cited late actress Nargis, who portrayed a mother in Mother India at a young age, as an example of embracing challenging roles.
It looks like Anil’s statement in his interview didn’t go down well with Ameesha as the latter took to her Twitter handle and made it clear that she has no plans to taking up such roles, regardless of the paycheck.
The Humraaz actress wrote, “Dear @Anilsharma_dir dear Anilji. This is only a film and not a reality of some family, so on screen, I do have a say as to what I want to do and not do respect u loads, but I will never play a mother-in-law for Gadar or any film, even if paid 100 crores.”
She further added, “Fans don’t want to see Tara Sakina as father-in-law and mother-in-law; they love their Tara being a hero and a superhero only.” The actress also wished him luck for his film Vanvaas which stars his son Utkarsh Sharma alongside Nana Patekar and Simrat Kaur.

For the unversed, Anil Sharma in his interview with Siddharth Kannan said, “She (Ameesha Patel) didn’t get the screen time that she enjoyed in Gadar 1, so she struggled to accept the natural progression and age of her character’s life; after playing Jeete’s mother, she had to play a mother-in-law.”
He further continued, “I understand she is beautiful and is working hard on herself, but she is an actor and Nargis Dutt also played a mother onscreen to young actors when she was young).
The filmmaker told Kannan that he felt the reason behind Ameesha’s decision was the external influences of branding in today’s times where it is perceived that actors must avoid certain roles to maintain their image. Sharma believed that these things might have caused a conflict in her mind because of which she was apprehensive about playing a mother-in-law in his film.
He also shared that the issues got sorted with time. Expressing his respect for the actress, he said that she will always be the same Sakina from Gadar 1 for him, and he has no ill will toward her, adding that she is, and will always be, part of his family.
Gadar 2, a sequel to Anil Sharma’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023.
